A piling that has lost more than 30–40% of its cross-section at any point should be considered compromised. That’s not a DIY repair — that’s a replacement. Wrapping the lower 3 to 4 feet of each piling — from roughly 12 inches below the waterline to 24 inches above it — with hardware cloth or galvanized sheet metal creates a physical barrier the animals can’t chew through. Use 16-gauge galvanized steel sheet metal cut into strips and secured with stainless steel banding straps. Avoid regular steel or aluminum — both corrode quickly in saltwater environments.
